This one right here... she has my whole heart and soul. She is my best friend, my mini me, and the little love of my life. Even as a photographer/mom, I find that I am constantly taking pictures of everyone in my family, but am seldom in them myself. That's why, I bought myself a remote control for my camera and I have made it a priority to get into more photos with my daughter.
You guys, they grow SO fast! I usually take one self portrait of us a year, just to make sure we get something together, but now that she is four, my heart aches with the realization that she's growing up too fast, and she won't be this tiny human much longer.
Once a year is simply not enough! Not for me, not for you. So to show you that I practice what I preach, I am making a serious effort to set up these little mini shoots with her throughout the year. For my clients, selfies are great, but you deserve more, and so do your kids. They want to see all of mama in their photos, not just her face. That's what I'm here for. At the very least to capture you all once a year. But you can also ask your husband, a friend, or a stranger at the park to take a picture of you. It doesn't matter if you don't feel like you look your best, or you think you aren't wearing the right clothing, just take all the photos. I promise you they won't care about any of that when they are older.
For my fellow mom photographers, we get so caught up in capturing everyone else's moments, that we forget about our own. Make time mamatogs, because we deserve it too! I hire other photographers to take our family photos, but we have all of the equipment and skill to do it ourselves more often throughout the year. I put this together fairly quickly, and I don't particularly love my kitchen, but that's what I had to work with, so I went for it. I think these photos are perfectly imperfect, and she will cherish them someday when I am gone.
Happy Valentine's Day! I hope your day is full of love! But remember, love should be celebrated every day, not just once a year.
